A Blast From the Past?

Thinking back to the origins of the role-playing game, there are a few titles that instantly arise in every gamer's mind. Dungeons & Dragons, of course, steals the show, but there are a few others which were so prominent in their day, that still today, games clone portions of their interface, environment, or even names. Games like King's Quest, Ultima and finally, Wizardry were so popular that they are still spawning sequels over twenty years beyond their beginnings.

Wizardry, which began as a dorm-room challenge to avoid studying for finals, has evolved into an eight game legacy, one of the most respected titles in all of the RPG genre, and one of the few successful independent publishers in the business. As the first first-person 3D RPG Wizardry had quite a bit to prove, yet, by staying entirely true to the old-style pen and paper gameplay of role-playing, it managed to captivate even portions of the D&D crowd. Wizardry 8, the latest installment of this classic series, promises to bring the series into an era that already has more RPGs than it knows what to do with, and manage to maintain is charm and identity amidst the competition.
