Little Big Idea
Though many PS3 owners have been counting down the days until Little Big Planet for quite a while now, its long range fan base was amazingly silent. Certainly a year ago the buildup was nowhere near what we saw for ultra hit titles like Metal Gear Solid 4, Heavenly Sword, Lair, or even the multi-platform titles of Fallout 3 and Far Cry 2. But anyone with even half an eye looking at the PlayStation scene has known in the last few months that this little big idea has been seated among the big guns of the platform with many even citing it as one of the big reasons to buy a PS3!
We can understand such things from Nintendo. While the SNES was considered the system to beat, the N64, and to a greater extent the GameCube and the Wii have been cited as being boons for casual gamers, and reaching out to the family friendly audience. Certainly an excessively cute game would blend in well there. But what is a warm and cuddly little game doing as a PlayStation 3 exclusive? The system of Metal Gear Solid, the legacy of Final Fantasy...and somehow we end up with a sack puppet in dream land? How can it be?
Rest assured, Little Big Planet is quite a bit different from your average cute family game. While it boasts a huge suite of online features, it's easy to overlook the simple fact that, cute or not, retro platformers appeal to hardcore gamers. Indeed, this one is a good bit of retro mixed in with some cutting edge modern amenities. Let's take a look!
